Which coins are supported?

Trusted by Collectors. Built for Confidence.

Since 2024, our Gold Sovereign Tester has become a trusted addition to collectors' and investors' toolkits. By quickly checking a coin's dimensions and weight, it helps identify coins that deserve closer inspection before money changes hands. Now available in various denominations.

When you're investing in gold, a few seconds of checking can help avoid an expensive mistake!

Our pocket-sized tool is calibrated exclusively for each stated coin type, including various year variations and always matching official issuing mint specifications.

Every single testing device undergoes manual calibration against accurate physical benchmark coins in our UK workshop before dispatch.

Will it scratch my coins?

No. The tough thermoplastic material is significantly softer than coin-grade gold/ silver, ensuring completely non-destructive testing that preserves the numismatic value.

Frequently asked questions

What is a CoinVerify Tester Tool?

The CoinVerify Tester Tool is a precision-made, portable coin screening gauge designed to help you check whether a coin matches its expected physical specifications.

Each tester allows you to check key characteristics such as diameter and thickness, while the correct weight specification is provided on the tool for quick reference. Used together with accurate weighing scales and the supplied magnet where applicable, these simple checks can provide a strong indication of whether a coin warrants further investigation.

Our testers are designed for convenient use at home, at coin fairs, when buying or selling, or anywhere you may want an additional level of confidence in a coin.

How do I use my CoinVerify Tester?

Testing is quick and straightforward:

  1. Check the diameter by placing the coin into the appropriate diameter test area.

  2. Check the thickness using the corresponding slot or thickness guide. Where a pass-through slot is provided, the coin should pass through as intended.

  3. Check the weight using accurate digital weighing scales and compare the result with the specification shown on your CoinVerify tester.

  4. Perform the magnet test using the supplied strong rare-earth magnet. Hover the magnet immediately above the coin to screen for magnetic base metals.

  5. If the coin successfully passes the applicable checks, this provides a strong indication that it meets the expected physical specifications.

If a coin fails a check, produces an unusual result, or you remain uncertain about its authenticity, we recommend professional examination such as XRF testing.

Which coins do CoinVerify testers work with?

Each CoinVerify tester is designed specifically for the coin or group of coins stated on that particular product.

Dimensions and weight references are based on the specifications of the relevant issuing mint, with appropriate variations accommodated where applicable.

Because different bullion and proof coins have different specifications, always use the correct CoinVerify tester for the coin being checked.

What type of counterfeit coins are there?

Counterfeit coins can take many forms, and the type encountered will depend upon the particular coin.

Historic counterfeits may include contemporary copies originally produced to deceive merchants, while some older jewellery copies were manufactured from precious-metal alloys but were never genuine mint-issued coins.

Modern counterfeits can range from lower-purity precious-metal copies to plated base-metal replicas.

A counterfeit may look extremely convincing to the naked eye. However, using a different metal or alloy can affect the coin's diameter, thickness, weight or magnetic properties, which is why checking several physical characteristics can be an effective first-line screening method.

Why should I use a physical coin tester?

A physical tester provides a fast, convenient and reusable way to screen coins before buying, selling or adding them to your collection.

Rather than relying solely on appearance, CoinVerify lets you compare several measurable characteristics against the expected specifications of the coin.

It is particularly useful as an initial screening tool to identify coins that may require closer inspection or professional testing.

Are CoinVerify tester tools suitable for everyone?

Yes. CoinVerify tools are suitable for collectors, bullion investors, coin dealers, jewellers and anyone who regularly buys, sells or handles precious-metal coins.

They are also simple enough to use if you're completely new to coin collecting or bullion investing.

Why is the coin weight checked as part of the testing process?

A coin can sometimes appear visually convincing while having an incorrect weight.

CoinVerify provides the expected weight specification for the relevant coin, while a separate set of accurate digital weighing scales allows you to compare the actual coin against that figure.

Combining diameter, thickness, weight and the magnet test provides a more useful screening process than relying upon any one physical characteristic alone.

Which weighing scales should I use?

For best results, we recommend using accurate digital jewellery or mini scales capable of measuring to at least 0.01 g.

What is the purpose of the integrated magnet?

Selected CoinVerify kits include a strong rare-earth magnet as an additional screening test.

Hover the magnet very close to the coin without allowing it to strike the surface. A strong attraction or the coin sticking to the magnet can indicate the presence of magnetic material inconsistent with the expected composition of many precious-metal coins.

The magnet test should be considered one part of the overall screening process, rather than a standalone authenticity test.

What material are CoinVerify testers made from?

Each tester is manufactured in the UK from a high-grade, low-tolerance polymer selected to provide a lightweight, durable and consistent testing tool.

Are CoinVerify testers made in the UK?

Yes. CoinVerify testing tools are designed and manufactured here in Yorkshire.

CoinVerify is also home to the trusted TGS Gold Sovereign Tester, which formed the foundation for our expanding range of bullion and proof coin testing tools.

Are CoinVerify testers suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. CoinVerify tools have been designed to make physical coin screening quick, understandable and accessible.

The relevant specifications are incorporated into the tester itself, providing a convenient reference without having to look up measurements every time you check a coin.

Will the tester damage my coins?

When used correctly and carefully, the smooth polymer construction should not scratch or damage your coins.

As with any coin-handling equipment, however, care should always be taken. We recommend particular caution with proof, high-grade and numismatically valuable coins, where even minor contact can affect the finish or value.

Does the tester analyse gold, silver or platinum purity or composition?

No. CoinVerify checks physical characteristics and does not directly analyse the elemental composition or purity of a coin.

For analysis of metal composition, professional methods such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF) testing are recommended.

Other methods, including acid testing, can be invasive and potentially damage a coin. We therefore do not recommend destructive testing methods for collectible or numismatically valuable coins.

Does the tester 100% guarantee that my coin is genuine?

No physical gauge alone can guarantee that a coin is genuine.

A coin matching its expected diameter, thickness, weight and applicable magnetic characteristics provides a strong indication that it meets the expected physical specifications, but sophisticated counterfeits may still require specialist examination.

CoinVerify should therefore be regarded as a screening tool rather than a definitive authentication service.

If a coin fails any check, produces an unusual result, or you remain uncertain about its authenticity or metal composition, we recommend professional verification such as XRF analysis. We are also happy to assist with questions if you have a coin you would like to discuss further with us.

Can a genuine coin fail the CoinVerify test?

In some exceptional circumstances, yes.

Genuine coins can exhibit small variations caused by age, wear, minting tolerances, damage or differences between years and issuing mints.

A coin failing a CoinVerify check does not automatically mean it is counterfeit. Instead, it should be treated as a reason to investigate the coin further and, where appropriate, seek professional verification.
